Floating Paver Patio in a DFW Backyard
We built a large-format paver patio off the back of the house, setting oversized concrete slabs in black gravel joints inside a steel edge. It extends the existing concrete slab into a full outdoor room without touching the original patio.
What the yard needed
The house came with a small poured slab off the back door, big enough for a chair and not much else. The rest of the yard was lawn running flat to a wood privacy fence. The homeowners wanted usable outdoor space at the same level as the existing slab, and they wanted it to read as a designed surface rather than a concrete pour bolted onto the first one.
What we did
We laid out the patio square to the house and excavated the footprint to base depth, because in North Texas clay the base is what decides whether a patio is still flat in year five. Base went in compacted in lifts. Oversized concrete pavers were set in a running grid with deliberate open joints, and those joints were filled with black gravel so the pattern stays crisp instead of blurring into a solid field. A steel edge restraint wraps the whole perimeter and holds the gravel and the pavers in place against the lawn, which is what keeps the outer course from creeping outward over time.
The result
A patio several times the size of the original slab that sits flush with it and flush with the grass, so there is no lip to trip on and a mower can run right up to the edge. The dark joints and dark edge frame every paver individually. The pavers look wet in these photos because they had just been washed down at the end of the install.
