Artificial Turf or Natural Grass: Which for DFW?

Quick Answer

Choose artificial turf for shade, dogs, small yards, and pool areas; choose natural grass (sod) for big sunny lawns and the lowest up-front cost. Here is how to decide in North Texas.

Artificial Turf or Natural Grass: Which for DFW? — Loera's Landscaping DFW blog

In North Texas, the choice between artificial turf and natural grass comes down to your specific yard. Choose turf for deep shade, dog areas, small or hard-to-mow spaces, and pool surrounds, where real grass constantly fails. Choose natural grass (sod) for big sunny lawns where it thrives and where you want the lowest up-front cost. Here is the honest comparison so you do not overspend on the wrong one.

Where artificial turf wins

  • Shade. Nothing real grows well under mature live oaks or between close houses. Turf does not need sun.
  • Dogs. No mud, no dead urine spots, no holes (see pet turf).
  • Small / awkward spaces. Courtyards, side yards, strips too small to mow.
  • Water and time. No mowing, no watering, no fertilizing. Big savings over years.
  • Always green, even in August and drought restrictions.

Where natural grass (sod) wins

  • Up-front cost. Sod is much cheaper to install than turf per square foot (see sod cost).
  • Big sunny yards. Bermuda and Zoysia thrive in full DFW sun and look fantastic.
  • Heat underfoot. Real grass stays cooler than turf in direct summer sun.
  • The natural feel and the cooling effect of a living lawn.

The honest math

Turf costs more on day one but stops the recurring spend on water, mowing, and reseeding. On a problem yard (shade, dogs, tiny space), it pays back and saves the constant frustration. On a large, healthy, sunny lawn, sod is the better value and the better surface. Many DFW homes do both: sod for the open lawn, turf for the dog run or shaded side yard.

Cost over time, not just day one

The sticker price flips depending on how long you look. Artificial turf costs several times more than sod per square foot to install, but from that day on it stops the recurring spend on water, mowing, and fertilizer. Sod is far cheaper up front, then carries the ongoing cost of keeping a living lawn alive. On a problem area (deep shade, a dog run, a strip too small to mow) turf usually pays back and ends the constant reseeding and mud. On a big, healthy, sunny lawn, sod is the better value and the better surface, and the math is not close. For real per-square-foot numbers, see our sod cost guide and artificial turf cost guide.

The things people forget: heat, lifespan, and pets

Three things surprise people after the fact. Heat: turf holds heat and can run much hotter than a living lawn in direct August sun, so a full-sun play area is one place real grass still wins on comfort (our guide on whether turf gets hot in Texas covers this). Lifespan: turf is not forever, good turf lasts around 15 to 20 years and then gets replaced, while a sod lawn maintained well goes indefinitely. Pets: turf is the clear winner for dogs, with no mud, holes, or dead urine spots, and it rinses clean (see pet turf).

Common questions

Is artificial turf cheaper than grass? Not up front. Turf costs more to install and saves money over the years by cutting water, mowing, and fertilizer. Sod is cheaper on day one.

Does artificial turf get hot? Yes, in direct summer sun it runs hotter than a living lawn, which is why full-sun play areas often stay in real grass.

What is best for a shady yard? Turf, easily. Nothing real grows well in deep shade under mature trees. If there is some sun, St. Augustine is the natural-grass option.

What is best for dogs? Turf, for no mud and no dead spots. If you want real grass for dogs, Bermuda or Zoysia in full sun holds up best.

Can I use both? Yes, and many DFW homes do: sod for the open sunny lawn, turf for the dog run or shaded side yard.
